The Dark Night Of The Soul

Hello everyone, yes these are one of the times where I get slackly again, just got back from Chinese New Year holiday, so forgive me for not posting anything during the previous weeks, but redeem it by sharing you this meaningful testimony by Fr Terry Burke on drawing ourselves nearer to God:

When I was newly ordained, the Catholic Chaplain at Wadsworth Jail, in London, asked me if I would supply for him, while he was in holiday and I agreed. My daily rounds at the prison included a visit to the hospital wing and, one morning, the warder in charge told me that there was a prisoner in the padded cell. He had become very violent due, due, I think, to withdrawal from drugs, and they had strapped him in a strait jacket and locked him in the padded cell. I asked the warder if I could go into the cell and he said I could, for the man had quiet down, so I unlocked the cell door and went in.

The man, in his middle 20's, stood up, when I came in, and seemed very pleased to see me and as there ware no seats, we sat on the floor to talk. I was very nervous, for that was my first time in such a situation and, at first, I paid much more attention wondering how quickly I could get to the door should he become violent, than listening to what he was saying. But slowly his words began to register.

He was, I gathered, a Catholic, although not a religious man. He told me of his awful experience the night before, when he had become completely out of control, throwing himself at the wall and floor screaming and in terror- and with no power to stop himself. "I was in hell, Father!" he said, "really and truly in hell." But as I sat listening to him, it became obvious that something else had also happen to him during that terrible long night, for he said to me, "But, I have told God, that if he will use my sufferings to bring healing to some poor sick child, then I am willing to go through it again." Somehow, in the darkness of that night and in the lack of all that we usually associate with the presence of God, this young man had met God.

In spirituality, this is sometimes called, 'the dark night of the soul', and is described in *apophatic theology as coming to know God by what he is not. In our religious services, we rarely come up against this way of meeting God; we concentrate instead on being inspired by beauty in ritual, music and readings. However, there are one or two places in our liturgy, where we approach God in this way - Holy Thursday evening comes to mind, when the altars are stripped and the tabernacle stands empty with its doors flung wide. That emptiness can bring u into very intimate union with the Christ, who is not there!

All of us, at some time during our life journey will experience this 'dark night of the soul' in some way. A very common forms the experience of 'dryness' in prayer times, when there is no enjoyment in our prayer or religious duties. At such times, there is a great temptation to judge prayer as being no use, because we experience no benefit from it. But this darkness is an essential part of our spiritual journey as it was also part of Jesus' spiritual journey when, for instance, he cried out on the cross, "God, my God why have you forsaken me?" This cry of Jesus, like the cry of that young man in Wandsworth Jail, is not a turning away from God, but is, in fact, a profound act of faith- a reaching for God in the 'nothingness'

You and I will probably never go through the experience of that young man in Wandsworth Jail. Our dark night is far more likely to be boredom in prayer, but the temptation to turn away from God may be very great. At such times, we stand on the threshold of knowing God at a much deeper level. That young man turned to God at a time, when many would sat God could not be there - and in reaching for God in the darkness he found a compassion for sick children, which brought him into the heart of God. Our choice may not have so dramatic a form, but it will be the same basic choice - do I turn away or embrace the darkness? There will be the temptation to turn away, but as St Peter said: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68)

*Apophatic Theology - also known as Negative Theory, is a theory that attempts to describe God. the Divine God, by negation, to speak only in terms of what may not be said about the perfect goodness that is God.

Trust in God,

The process of trust in God is like building a sandcastle, It involves a lot of consideration:

First, you need to have a good foundation so that we can build a stable sandcastle.

As it is made of sand, it is unstable and will easily crumble. And sometimes the surfaces of the sandcastle will slowly being chipped by winds.

These winds are like doubts that we have in heart when we first trust in God. Just like the sandcastle, our trust may crumble bit by bit. When we face challenges, our trust may easily been blown away, and cracks will show up on the surface.

Sometimes our sandcastle’s surface will be wash away by the sea water, or being kicked or throw stone at by naughty kids. These best describe as the bigger obstacles that we face in life. Maybe our trust in God we’ll be washed away. We might be lost of ways and is tempted to turn away from God. Or maybe our faith will be challenged at tested by peoples. Just like the naughty kids, it will always be bombarded with many different ways, some small, some big, some are controversial, some are just downright creative.

But if we manage to stay true to God, to reach for God in the “nothingness”, to learn and be grateful for all the trials, just like when we take in the water and collect the stone. If we are able to mix it all with cements, we will be able to make our sandcastle as hard as concrete. By that time, we can withstand the winds, the waters and all the bombardments.

When we are confidence enough with our “sandcastle”, we can try to explore and expand our territory. Share our knowledge on how to build a strong sandcastle. And if you're humble enough, start to expand your castle from scratch. Built it using sand as your basic material, and accept all the beatings form outside, without shaking or damaging your core.

And believe me, soon you’ll make a fortress out of it. Complete with beautiful interiors and a grand exterior that will you can show to the world!

May God Bless you all

Now I See: Not So Random Probability

Recently, there has been one topic which happened to be on my mind for a while - just didn't have the time to write it up, but since I found a few extra minutes this morning, I'd guess its about time to update my posts too.

It revolves pretty much around the common saying that life is unfair. Well, to start off with, after deep thought, the statement itself is invalid. What determines fair and unfair in life? What determines justice for wrong deeds? Does killing one merit the killing of the killer? These are all in actual fact, derived out of our very own, personal opinions, don't you think? Who decided that its not fair to get punched and not punch in return? An eye for an eye? Its pretty much us. Science has nothing to do with it. While, well, there's the law that every force in any direction will generate an equivalent force in the opposite may probably apply, lol... Well, that's not pretty much the topic now though, but more on the 'luck' part of it.

Many people believe that life is unfair, and luck goes to certain people who then get to enjoy life or get blessed more than others. Well, if that is what you might want to call luck, that is. I personally do not believe in any of this - but I do believe that we have insufficient knowledge of the events and conditions around us to make the most appropriate choice. And when we fail to do so, we make a mistake, and then blame it on luck for our lack of knowledge.

Let me present it in a different angle: Consider a dice. We always think that a dice is pretty random, and whatever number we get out of a dice is out of pure luck. Well, that is if the dice was perfect, and if the conditions in which the dice is thrown every time is done perfectly, scientifically to say, in a manner that is completely random and impossible to predict. Well, usually that is - because we can't throw a dice twice in the exact same conditions as the last technically. However, consider this - What are the conditions that will decide which face of the dice will face up in the end?

1. The design on the dice itself - Is the dice designed to have all sides equal? Is the material weight balanced? Any damage to the dice faces? The surface type of the dice (Which will determine how it will roll on the ground)?
2. Throwing/dropping method - How much spin is done when releasing the die? Any acceleration during the throw upwards/downwards (Determining the velocity of impact)? How far from the ground? Any contact with any objects during the fall?
3. Falling medium - What is the dice falling through? Air? Water? Air viscosity? Air pressure? Any wind? How strong is the gravity?
4. Surface impact - What kind of surface? Surface layout? Any interfering objects? Bumps?

And that is probably not the exhaustive list - Now, consider that IF we knew all the conditions and variables controlling the fall of the dice, would be be able to predict which face the dice would turn up every time? IF we did KNOW - We can predict the outcome EVERY time!

And that is pretty much what I wanted to say - Life is never unfair. It is just whether we know the rules - and i'st just whether we know the conditions around us when we are making decisions. Some people may make 'lucky' decisions despite their lack of knowledge, while others may not - but that doesn't make luck exist. On the other hand, there are some who constantly appear to be successful and always happy, etc - they have better knowledge of the game and make right decisions everytime. Feng Shui? BS. But not to completely disregard these astrological pseudosciences, to be honest - many astrologers do have many truths presented in their material - Just that their ability to 'play cheat' is obviously fake unless they could understand the mechanics of quantum physics for starters.

Ina different picture, have you ever tried to play chess with a grand master? Or just a very experienced veteran? Or play monopoly, or even DotA (for those gamers) with someone very experienced. Obviously we will lose to the experienced player. BUT what is the first thing we say after losing a few games with them? "THIS GAME IS NOT FAIR!" Now you know, these are the words of wisdom that only comes out of the mouths of fools. Its not that the game is unfair. You don't know how to play the game. Instead of blaming the game and rage-quitting - learn to play it - Because life is a game you can't quit playing without getting yourself killed.

Life has far too many rules to muster. And conditions across such a massive landscape its impossible to keep track of everything to make the best decisions every time. However, that is our duty to do our best in maintaining an operatable level of decision making every time. Otherwise, we would be one of the many who would say "life is unfair, life has no meaning". Well, since we can't quit the game, we have only one other option unless well, we really do quit the game - after which the number of players drop by 1, which means nothing much to a game of 6 billion players - still the most popular eh? So we come back to the fundamental principle - Learning is a never ending process - and well, when you've learn everything it doesn't mean you have to bully new players - you have the option to have mercy and teach them how to play as opposed to what the world is doing, which would also solve the mess were in. Well, perhaps someday, we might get lucky.

Faith

Faith means being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrew 1.1). Faith also means believe, purely believe, like a child. Believe God’s words. A lot of the elders, they are righteous and have good testimonies, they have been chosen by God. It’s all because they have Faith. For example, By faith, Moses lead the people passed through the Red Sea.

Hebrew 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Some people may say that they don’t have the fate to be with God, thus they don't want turn to Jesus. It’s wrong and I don't believe that. Because if we have faith, truly and humble to seek for God. God will lead us and draw us to His side. Although our God are so almighty and exalted, but He is still our Heavenly Father.

Mathew 7:7-8
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

Our earthly father will love us so much, he will try his best to get what we ask. Without a doubt, our Heavenly Father will love us much more than anything.

Dear brothers and sisters, have faith in God. He can turn, poor to rich, weak to strong, proud to humble. Purely just believe. And God Dislike children that without Faith.

James 1:6-8
But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
